I came out to friends in November 2005. Leading up to that, i made several similarly themed notes or poems; placing “out” in the margin is both clever and cheeky. I was also still trying to reconcile where my faith could make space for me if i was gay: being confronted by missionaries was a bizarre moment because i had a theological education and ten years of church ministry involvement - but where i saw complexity in their question, they were prepared only for a simple response which i couldn’t dutifully offer.
